“Sonny Assu exhibited iDrums, painted new works in the inaugural exhibit of Equinox Gallery 2, located on the 2nd floor of the Equinox Gallery this spring.”
Last weekend, my good buddy Alex asked me to shoot some family portraits for Mother’s Day. His mom was thrilled, and asked that I do more of a natural-feeling shoot with them. I decided Vancouver’s Charleson Park would provide a great backdrop.
We created some fantastic images and hopefully a lot of good memories. Thanks guys!
A portion of this series has been posted in my Personal Work section for some time, but, I’d like to take this opportunity to write about this project today.
Mt. Pleasant, my neighbourhood here in lovely Vancouver, is a fascinating combination of elements. The old with the new, the polished and run down, trendy and traditional all in close quarters. Since moving here in 2004 it has had a great impact on my creative vision. I wanted to capture some of my impressions, give focus to what, until now, has been only a backdrop.
This will not be a historical piece.
This project will culminate in a book. There is a lot of shooting left to be done, but, I believe this is an important project for me. I’d like to take the opportunity to ask anyone who would like to come forward and tell me a story about the neighbourhood, would like to share any photographs past or present – I’d love to see them, and I’d love to publish the best in addition to my own work.
I’d like to share with you some pages from a prototype book I’ve created to help explain my vision of the completed project with people I’ve spoken with.
I know its going to be a good day when I see Sonny Assu calling on my call display – He contacted me to shoot more of his work recently for magazine publication.
I find projects like these are very rewarding, taking already fantastic artwork and presenting it in a creative fashion for print or web use. Artists! Please give me a call, I’d love to shoot your documentation project.
Hello everyone,
I’ve started a website to showcase Canadian and International photographic artists and their work at www.photoshowcase.ca. The format consists of a few images in a particular series, a short write up about the work and the creator, as well as a short interview. These will be posted in a blog format every few days to the website.
What I would like from you is 3 – 5 sRGB format JPGs, 1000px on the long side, two – four paragraphs about your work, its significance to you, your inspirations, and another two – four paragraphs about yourself as an artist, any information you would like to share with us. Please include both a location (including country) and the year in which the work was produced.
*Your written content may be edited for clarity.
All submissions should be sent to submissions@photoshowcase.ca
Those selected to be part of the project will be contacted via email with further details of publication, any interview questions I may have. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to offer any monetary compensation, or any guaranteed exposure, but, with a little luck, we can create an outlet from which our work can shine.
*All copyrights remain with the creator/owners, and I will only ask for a non-exclusive license to display the work publicly in the context of this project.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you are about to make a submission, I look forward to reviewing it!
Another lovely canvas print, 16″x20″, 3/4″ thick, gallery wrapped. This one already has an owner, but, if you’d like one of your own, there are 9 left in this limited edition, act quickly! They are priced at $200 and are available in my ETSY.com shop.
“In this deceptively simple 3-minute talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses on the power of the magic words “thank you” — to deepen a friendship, to repair a bond, to make sure another person knows what they mean to you. Try it.”
Thanks to TED.com
This past week Canadian aboriginal artist Sonny Assu contacted me to do some portraits at the Equinox gallery on Granville here in lovely Vancouver. Sonny, as always, was great to work with, great sense of humor, fantastic presence on camera.
In addition to having an excellent diner-style brunch menu, friendly staff and great prices, Nice Cafe (154 east 8th ave @ main st) also speaks for artists offering a generous quarter-year term for displaying work on its walls. And, this quarter, it is my turn! I urge you to go partake of the phenomenal Corned Beef Hash, Eggs Benedict, bottomless coffee, and take in some of my work.
The works displayed are 16×20″ gallery wrap canvas on 3/4″ stretcher bars and will be for sale, each costing $200. The current collection is a local one, speaking to spring and the renewal the city goes through. As these images sell, a new collection will be displayed. Each canvas print is part of a limited edition of 10 that are signed and numbered on the back. They are also for sale on ETSY.com. Act quickly, they wont last long!
